Deborah Kelly, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, was recognized as Scholar of the Week on the Virginia Tech research website in early October. The Office of the Vice President for Research gives the honor to Virginia Tech faculty members who are doing outstanding work in their fields. The goal of the program is to recognize individuals while also telling people about research and scholarly activities at the university.

Kelly was recognized for her research focusing on developing innovative approaches to studying complex biological machinery. The award notes her work to develop new cryo-electron microscopy and computational modeling techniques to study biological structures in a liquid environment. It also recognizes specific research into how glial cells become cancerous, how adhesive proteins allow cancer cells to spread, how cardiac tissue develops under normal and pathological conditions, and which components of the Notch signaling pathway can serve as therapeutic targets.
