Sharon Ramey coauthored a study highlighted on the Today Show on Dec. 15. The study focuses on the risk factors that contribute to women’s retaining their pregnancy weight a year after giving birth.

The researchers, including scientists from the University of Chicago, concluded that pregnancy weight retention significantly contributes to obesity a year after the birth. This is also true for women who were a healthy weight before becoming pregnant. Ramey and her coauthors suggested that pregnant women should be better educated about healthy lifestyles during and after pregnancy to avoid becoming obese.

Ramey is a professor and distinguished research scholar at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute.
