Deborah F. Kelly, Ph.D.

Deborah Kelly, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, was invited to be a featured speaker at the Bite of Science event, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education, Capital One, Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, ExxonMobil, and the MeadWestvaco Foundation.

The Bite of Science event was part of a teacher-training program, meant to help improve a teacher’s ability to provide students a context of how science is applied in the real world. The teachers work primarily in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Kelly has developed novel technologies to visualize a range of molecules – including proteins, cancer cells, and viruses – at unprecedented resolution. By being able to see, in vivid detail, the mechanisms of molecules, scientists can begin to understand how they work and what needs to be done to correct them when they go awry.
