An image from the research of Michael Fox, an associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, was selected by Imperial College London as the Biomedical Picture of the Day on Sept. 28.

The image pictured is a brainbow—the colorfully tagged retinal ganglion cells of a rodent brain. The variety of colors was unexpected to Fox and his research team. They had expected only one color to dominate the image, with the implication that one specific cell would have the strongest connection in the visual brain. Instead, it appears that the retinal ganglion cells share their duties and the visual connections in the brain are far more complicated than initially thought.

Biomedical Picture of the Day is an online archive maintained by the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre at Imperial College London. The aim of the website is to “engage everyone, young and old, in the wonders of biomedicine.”
