Synaptic Effects of Aging and ALS From Cellular Phenomena to Molecular Analysis

August 16, 2011, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Gregorio Valdez, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Center for Brain Science, Harvard University

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, R1059
2 Riverside Circle, Roanoke, VA 24016

Dr. GregorioValdez’s future research will extend the characterization of mechanisms that help maintain and repair synapses, determining the mechanisms that allow some motor neurons and muscles fibers to resist the insults of aging and ALS. He plans to determine whether protective mechanisms acting at the neuromuscular junction can also preserve brain synapses. He will discuss the roles of miR-206, miR- 133b, and FGFs in aging and ALS-afflicted synapses.

About the Speaker:

Gregorio Valdez is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University.
