The motivation to eat is a primary cause of obesity. Dr. Leonard Epstein will review research on food reinforcement, including genetic, laboratory, clinical, and field studies. He will also discuss factors that influence food reinforcing, including the interactions between food research and impulsive behaviors.

About the Speaker:

Leonard Epstein, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor in both the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Buffalo, where he is also the chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Epstein’s research interests focus on health behavior change and determinants of eating, physical activity, and drug self-administration. He is an internationally recognized authority in the fields of childhood obesity, physical activity, weight control, and family intervention. For the past 30 years, he has conducted research relevant to the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, including mechanisms that regulate intake and energy expenditure in children.

Dr. Epstein has been president of the Division of Health Psychology of the American Psychological Association and has been the recipient of the American Psychological Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Health Psychology. He has published more 300 scientific papers and three books. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lafayette College and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Ohio University.
