Synapses, Muscular Dystrophy, and Brain Disorders

October 3, 2014, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Lin Mei, MD, PhD

Director of Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Professor of Neurology, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, Georgia

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, R3012
2 Riverside Circle, Roanoke, VA 24016

The human brain contains billions of neurons to receive and integrate a host of electrical and biochemical signals. Efficiency in communication among neurons is made possible by synapses, contacts formed between two neurons. Dr. Mei's lab is interested in mechanisms of synapse formation, neurotransmission, and synaptic plasticity. Dr. Mei's studies contribute to a better understanding of these processes and development of potential therapeutic strategies for mental disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, and depression and neurological disorders such as muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury, and epilepsy.
