Hypothesis-Generating Research and Predictive Medicine

September 12, 2014, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Les Biesecker, MD

Senior Investigator, Genetic Disease Research Branch, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, M106
2 Riverside Circle, Roanoke, VA 24016

While the hypothesis testing (research) and differential diagnostic (clinical) paradigms are effective and should continue, the availability of large scale medical sequencing begs the question as to whether these need to be our only paradigms. Dr. Biesecker will discuss a hypothesis generating approach to research and a predictive medicine approach to clinical care that disrupt these paradigms and how this can be developed.
