The Molecular Toolkit of Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers

September 12, 2014, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Erica Ollmann Saphire, PhD

Professor, Department of Immunology and Microbial Science, The Scripps Institute, San Diego, California

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, R3012
2 Riverside Circle, Roanoke, VA 24016

Viruses must achieve a number of functions in their lifecycles, often using compact genomes. Dr. Ollmann Saphire will describe her laboratory's discovery that Ebola virus extends the functional complexity of its seven-gene genome by rearranging at least one of its transcribed polypeptides into different structures, with each distinct protein structure conferring a separate and essential function in the virus lifecycle.
