Although the death rate from coronary heart disease has declined considerably, the mortality from non-coronary heart disease, including heart failure, has not. Our understanding of the causal etiology of cardiomyopathy has not kept pace with that of coronary artery disease. In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors such as infection and inflammation from viral myocarditis can cause cardiomyopathy. Dr. Knowlton will discuss interactions between genetic and acquired cardiomyopathies and suggest that management of dilated cardiomyopathy can be improved by better understanding the causative mechanisms that can cause cardiomyopathy. He will specifically emphasize viral heart disease and alterations in the cytoskeleton and intercalated discs that can affect cardiac function and conduction.
