Ramey study on early childhood education cited in USA Today editorial
Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) Professor and Distinguished VTC Research Scholar Craig Ramey's long-term study of at-risk children was referenced in a USA Today editorial about the US educational system.
Editorial author retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John M. Shalikashvili listed Ramey's University of North Carolina study, titled The Carolina Abecedarian Project, as an example of research showing that high-quality early education programs are the most cost-effective way to help children succeed in school and later in life.
The study began in 1972 and followed four cohorts of individuals born between 1972 and 1977. It found that at-risk children who participated in an early education program were two-and-a-half times more likely to be attending a four-year college at age 21 than those who didn't participate.
